Published Wed 30 Oct 2024

Our UTS Norths athletes demonstrated their competitive spirit and versatility at the Treloar Shield Round 3 competition at Mingara on 26 October 2024. The event featured remarkable performances across all age categories, with athletes managing challenging wind conditions and a unique sprint setup utilising both the home and back straights.

Under 18s:
Matilda Harrison dominated the sprints with impressive victories in both the 100m (12.27s) and 200m (24.77s). The men's sprints saw strong performances from Thomas Scodellaro and Alexander Fijan, with Scodellaro clocking 11.73s in the 100m and 23.93s in the 200m. Jocelyn Blair showed consistency with fourth-place finishes in both 100m (12.94s) and 200m (27.00s), contributing to the team's 201-point tally for fourth place in the division.

Open Category:
Jasmin Guthrie led our women's sprint squad with outstanding performances in the 100m (12.46s) and 200m (24.45s). Kate Wahby and Samara Bond added depth to our sprint contingent with strong showings. In the field events, Charles Seppelt impressed with a 40.68m javelin throw, while Rhedyn Wong secured victory in the women's javelin with 33.10m. The division finished second overall with 276 points.

Masters 35-49:
The division showcased our depth with Joanna Davis and Nicki Drinkwater leading the charge. Davis claimed victory in both the 100m (13.56s PB) and 200m (28.24s PB), while Drinkwater demonstrated her versatility by winning both the high jump (1.45m) and triple jump (9.26m). In the men's events, David Neill and Martin Szeto engaged in friendly rivalry across the sprints, contributing to the division's second-place finish with 358.5 points.

Masters 50+:
Christine De Vries continued her excellent form, securing wins in both the 100m (13.86s) and 200m (29.00s). Jason McIntosh dominated the 800m with a winning time of 2:24.88, while Tim McGrath showed strength in the javelin with a 30.77m throw. Sandy Hoy added to the division's success with a victory in the 3000m race walk (24:40.12). These performances helped secure top spot in the division with an impressive 589.5 points, establishing a significant lead over the competition.

All Club Records achieved this weekend:
100m W60 Christine de Vries 13.86s
200m W60 Christine de Vries 29.00s
200m W65 Deborah Drennan 34.79s

Christine's performances double as NSW Masters State Records

Competition Notes & Concerns:

We had several DNS (Did Not Start), DNF (Did Not Finish), and DQ (Disqualification) results that should be noted:

DNF/DQ Incidents:

  • Connor Bond recorded a DNF in the Open 200m Heat 1 - having run a good bend he pulled up into the straight. Wish him the best with recovery.
  • Michael Maiers recorded a DNF in the Men's 50+ 800m Heat 1 - new comer Michael pulled up with a calf strain 500m into the race.

General Withdrawals (DNS):
We had several late withdrawals across events, particularly notable in:

  • Men's Open sprints (Alex Moore, Jack Berte, Olly McDonald)
  • Women's 50+ division (multiple events)
  • Several field event withdrawals

Given that Mingara is part of Country NSW the reasons why athletes do not start can simply be that it is too far to travel or one does not feel up to competing on the day. Other times there are deeper underlying reasons. Do you know that UTS Norths have Allied Health Professionals on the coaching panel?

Also in a fresh move Movement 101 from Neutral Bay and previous athlete with the club, Mikayla Mestousis, will be offering support services during our State Relay Championships. More about them will be shared in the upcoming State Relay news.

Congratulations to all athletes who participated. Your efforts continue to demonstrate the depth and strength of our club across all age groups and events.

The competition series takes a break for a week as we move into a club based High Velocity Meet at Barden Ridge this week and the Lamy Series All Comers at Rotary.
