Medals in the State Cross Country Championships 26th June

JULY 01 2016

No gold but UTS Norths athletes scored a respectable 4 silver medals and one bronze medal in the NSW Cross Country Championships at Nowra. Congratulations to the medal winners as follows:

  • Ed Goddard 2nd U20  8km 26:37;

  • Charlie Doherty 2nd U18  6km 19:45;

  • Sarah McDermott  2nd U18 4km  15:02

  • UTS Norths Open Men’s team – team event 2nd (Ruairidh MacDonald 4th, Adrian Plummer 5th, Leo Peterson 21st, Sam McAllister 30th);

  • Deb Drennan 3rd Women’s 55+ 6km  30:04

  • Hannah Cerezo 3rd Women's U14 3km  10:51

In total, UTS Norths were represented by 22 athletes which is a good number considering the distance to Nowra and the cold wintery conditions.

Ed Goddard continued his excellent winter form with a silver medal in the u20 event. Ruairidh MacDonald ran very well to achieve 4th place in the open 10k event. He was up with the leaders for best part of the race as was fellow UTS Norths member Adrian Plummer. Adrian ran a gutsy race as he came in 5th only 17 seconds behind Ruairidh. It was an excellent effort by Adrian considering that he wasn’t feeling well at the finish. Leo Peterson (21st) and Sam McAllister (30th), both coached by Alan Nolan, also ran well to help UTS Norths win the silver medal in the teams event. Charlie Doherty ran a very good race to grab silver in the u18 6k event and was only 19 seconds behind the winner.

Sarah McDermott was delighted with her silver medal in the u18 event where she was only 16 seconds behind the well performed national champion Catherine Miller from Asics West. She has shown very good improvement over this year under the guidance of coach James Fitzgerald. She has no doubt been inspired by her older sister Annabel who is in Poland preparing for the World Junior Championships. Sarah’s immediate goal is the Australian Cross Country Championships in Canberra in late August where she hopes to gain selection. Fellow Abbotsleigh student Sarah Reece  also ran well for a 5th place, just 28 seconds behind Sarah McDermott. Elese Gallen, also in the James Fitzgerald squad, continued her good winter form with a good 6th place in the open women’s event over the tough 10 km course. Hannah Cerezo ran very well for a bronze in the u14 event and was only 5 seconds behind the winner.

Deb Drennan ran well for a bronze medal in the women’s 55+ event over 6km. Brad Sharpe finished 7th in a high standard Masters 55+ event over 8kms.

NSW Road Relays 16 July 2016  UTS Norths in the Medals Again

JULY 25 2016

UTS Norths won two medals at the NSW Road Relays at Ourimbah. Our Open Men’s team attempted to make it a double after their history making gold medal in the State Cross Country Relays in May. It was the same four runners but this time could not match it with the strong Randwick Botany team. However they ran very well to win the silver medal in a strong competitive event. The team with their splits was as follows for the 4 x 4km event:

Ruairidh MacDonald 12:03

Ed Goddard  11:55

Matt Cox 11:43

Adrian Plummer  11:44

Matt Cox’s split of 11:43 was the equal 2nd fastest time of the day. Adrian Plummer’s split was the 4th fastest of the day.

The second medal was our Men’s 45+ team with an excellent effort to win the bronze medal. Their splits for the 4 x 4k event were:

Brad Sharpe  15:24

Paul Trainor14:42

Jim Cullane  16:44

Andy West  18:00

Congratulations to both teams! Brad Sharpe had a busy afternoon as he also ran the last leg in the 55+ B team which finished in 6th place. Well done Brad.

The Open Women’s team ran well for 5th place against some strong competition. Well done to Sarah Reece 14:33, Bianca Grimaldi 15:26, Holly Ratajec 16:49 and Izzy Thornton-Bott 14:40.

Attention now turn to the NSW Long Walks Championships at Chipping Norton on Sunday 24th July and the NSW Short Course Cross Country Championships at West Dapto on Saturday 30th July. NB Online entries close on Wednesday 27th July.
