NSW Cross Country Relays – Bronze medal to the Open Men
JULY 12 2015
Congratulations to the Open Men’s team and who won a bronze medal against very tough competition in the State Cross Country Relays at Miranda. It was also a coup for UTS as three out of the four runners are current or past UTS students.
The first leg was run by UTS EAP scholarship holder Adrian Plummer with a good 12m 59s leg for 4km to get the team in a handy second place. Ruairidh MacDonald and State Winter points score champion Matt Cox both ran terrific legs with 12m 55s to keep the team in third position behind the strong Randwick Botany and Sydney University teams, both teams contained international runners. Jye Perrott, 16 years old and the youngest in the team from the Kings School, ran a gutsy last leg in 14m 56s to hold the team in third place and the bronze medal. Jye, coached by John Atterton, showed courage in his leg as he was backing up after running 8kms in a GPS Cross Country meet in the morning.
UTS Norths also had a second open men’s team (12th) where the fastest leg was run by new member Sam Byrne (aged 19) who is also a UTS student. Sam ran a very good split of 13m 49s. Brad Sharpe ran a good 17m 02s as an individual runner in the 45+ masters event.
We had six teams in the female events:
1. U14 A (4 x 2km) 7th Ashlie Edwards, Jacinta Metcalf, Elise Brennan, Imogen Gardiner
2. U14 B 5th Hannah Cerezo, Gemma Bratton, Olivia Rooney, Rebecca Terry
3. U14 C 12th Abigail Johnston, Heidi Windybank, Ruby Quoyle, Lea Gassmann
4. U16 (4 x 3km) 5th Sarah McDermott, Sasha Gassmann, Molly Quoyle, Edita Grinsberg
5. U18 (4 x 3km) 4th Annabel McDermott, Claudia Mee, Emma Baptist, Isabella Thornton-Bott
6. Open (4 x 4km) 7th Claudia White, Holly Ratajec, Bianca Grimaldi, Elese Gallen.
The fastest splits in the under 14 girls were Hannah Cerezo (7m 45s), Ashlie Edwards (7m58s) and Abigail Johnstone (8m 08s). Edita Grinsberg, a recent transfer from Sydney Striders, was the fastest runner in the u16 team with a 3km run of 12m 39s. The under 18 girls team went close to a medal especially after a superb first leg by state champion Annabel McDermott who ran a 11m 22s for her first leg. The other girls ran well but were unable to stay in the first three but still finished a creditable fourth place against tough opposition. Elese Gallen ran the fastest leg in the open with a good split of 16m 11s for the 4kms. Deborah Drennan ran a good 18m 26s as an individual runner in the 55+ masters event.
Attention now turns to the NSW Cross Country Championships at Dapto on 20th June and the NSW Road Relay Championships at Ourimbah on 11th July where UTS Norths will again be entering a number of teams.

The top pace of the race is shown by the winner Shuru Bulo of Ethiopia clocking 9:01.12 a World Youth Championship record.
