Vale Ray Land

FEBRUARY 8, 2021

The 1956 Olympian Ray Land, joined the club in 1957 after moving from the Western Suburbs to Epping and went on to give Norths great service as an athlete, sprints coach and administrator. He was Norths President from 1989 to 1993 and treasurer from 1961 to 1971.

Raymond Charles Land was born on November 14, 1930, and contested the men’s 100m at the Melbourne Games, making it into the quarter finals. He was the 230th athlete to represent Australia at the Olympics and is a life member of Athletics NSW. In 1972 Ray was appointed Chief Marshall of the City to Surf road race.

Long term UTS Norths official Peter Douglas recalls Ray perched up in a cherry picker at the intersection of College and Park Sts as he prepared to send thousands of fun runners on their way to Bondi Beach. From here he would instruct the Lord Mayor when to fire the starter’s gun. The Ray Land Trophy is presented each year to the most improved under 18 years male athlete at the UTS Norths presentation dinner. A UTS Norths life member, Ray died at a Central Coast retirement village on May 14, 2020, aged 89 years.
