About and Experience

Penny Gillies is one of Australia’s most accomplished athletics coaches, bringing extensive experience as both an elite athlete and coach. A five-time Australian Champion in the 100m hurdles, Penny represented Australia at the highest level of international competition, including the 1970 Commonwealth Games and two Olympic Games (1972 and 1980), where she also served as team captain in 1980.

Penny was a silver medallist at the 1969 Pacific Conference Games in Tokyo and represented Australia at multiple World Cups in 1977, 1979, and 1981. Her outstanding contribution to athletics has been recognised through Life Memberships with Athletics Australia, Athletics NSW, and UTS Norths Athletics Club.

As a coach, Penny has continued to achieve success at the highest levels, coaching five Australian Champions across the 100m hurdles and 400m events. She has been an Australian Team Coach for sprints and relays at major international competitions, including World Youth Championships, World Junior Championships, the Commonwealth Games (2002 and 2006), and the 2009 World Championships.

Penny has also coached an Olympic semi-finalist in the 400m, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist in the men’s 4x400m relay, a fifth-place Commonwealth Games finalist in the men’s 400m, and a World Youth Championships bronze medallist in the women’s 400m.

With decades of experience, Penny continues to provide athletes with expert coaching, technical knowledge, and guidance to help them achieve their full potential.
