NSW Road Relay Championships

JULY 12, 2014

At the Annual General Meeting held last Sunday 29th June, the club’s executive and committee was  elected for the period 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015. Thank you to those present who elected me as the club president. I am honoured to take on this role and will do my best to fill the big shoes left by previous president Frazer Dowling. Thank you very much Frazer for your last three years as president, tireless work in progressing the interests of our club and for your vision of our club into the future. Fortunately for us, Frazer is remaining on the committee and will have a strong influence on the strategic path of the club, continuing with the initiatives he has already commenced. Thank you also to Peter Higgins, who has stood down as Vice President of the club, for all the behind the scenes work completed over the last 3 years. Peter will also be remaining on the committee and continuing in his many roles in athletics at the club and state level.

The new executive is as follows. We welcome a club favourite Jackie Bezuidenhout to Vice President, the experience of Peter Douglas returns as Secretary and the consummate Doug Barrett remains as Treasurer.

The strength of our club and desire for engagement of our club members was evident by the 30 members who braved the cold of Sunday morning for the AGM. Also evidence of the level of involvement is that we had 16 members applying for 15 committee positions, with an AGM vote required. Thank you to Dylan Dudley, Phil Krok and Nick Walker for your work on the committee over the last year. Hopefully you will find time to return to the committee in the future. Welcome to new committee members who all bring a wealth of experience; Sally Richardson, Maria Cimino and James Kaan. Congratulations also to James Kaan for being voted as the men’s club captain and congratulations to Emma Hunt for returning as the women’s club captain.

We have a strong committee this year with a broad range of skills and abilities, who we can call on to keep the momentum of excellent work from the previous executive and committee.  I am available to club members, so let me know how our great club can be improved. Give me a call or send me an email. The full list of committee members are:

Doug Barrett, Jackie Bezuidenhout, Maria Cimino, Peter Douglas, Ross Douglas, Frazer Dowling, Jimbo Fitzgerald, Peter Higgins, Emma Hunt, James Kaan, Andrew MacDonald, Ashley McMahon, Sally Richardson, Bart Steanes, Andy West.

UTS Norths runner Kasey Mumby ran well ahead of her expectations in winning the silver medal at the NSW Cross Country Championships at Nowra.

Kasey said that she only expected to run in the top 10. She started off the 8km journey conservatively in the first 20 but then showed the benefit of her hill training by gradually catching other runners in the uphill sections on the difficult course. She then surprised herself by moving ahead of the highly rated Milly Clark and into second position. She managed to hold off Milly to secure the silver medal in the good time of 30m 21s.

Kasey, 21, was previously a member of the Kembla Joggers club and joined UTS Norths two years ago. She graduated with a Sport and Exercise Science degree at University of Western Sydney last year and is studying for her Honours degree this year. Surprisingly she does not have a coach but said that she has learned a lot from previous coaches and has gained valuable knowledge from her Sports and Exercise Science degree. Hence she prepares her own training programs and it seems to be working!

She seems to enjoy cross country running more than the track and her goal is to make the Australian team for the World Cross Country Championships in China next year. Her next big race is the Sydney Harbour 10 on the 13th July followed by the State Short Course Cross Country Championships in early August.

Calling all cross country and road runners! The state road relay championships are coming up soon and UTS Norths will be entering a number of teams.

Girls flying the flag with some Silver

JULY 15, 2014

Whilst UTS Norths were only able to field five teams at the NSW Road Relays at Ourimbah, the females managed to lift the UTS Norths colours with two silver medal winning performances.

Firstly there was the under 18 team of Emily Hopper, Emma Baptist, Eliza Woollett and Emily Augustine who finished second behind the all conquering Randwick Botany team in the 4 x 2km event.

Emily Hopper led off with an excellent first leg of 6m 34s to record the fastest split of the team. In fact her split was the third fastest run of the day for her age group. Emma Baptist and Eliza Woollett ran well with splits of 7m33s  and 7m 27s respectively. Emily Augustine changed over with the team in fourth place but ran an excellent last leg in 6m42s to catch the Ryde and Kembla runners and clinch the silver medal for her team. Eliza and Emily (Augustine) are training partners at Rotary Field under coach Alan Nolan. Eliza, 14, was the youngest in the team.

Emily Hopper has had a great winter – silver in the Cross Country Relays, bronze in the State Long Course Cross Country Championships and now silver in the road relays. She was selected in the Athletics Australia Under 17 National Development Squad. Under the guidance of her coach Ken Green, her short term goals are the All Schools Cross Country Championships on 18th July and the State Short Course Cross Country Championships on 2nd August.

Emily Augustine also has had a successful winter with similar medals in the cross country and road relays. Her big goal coming up is the World Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China in August where she will compete in the 1,500 metres.

The second silver medal was the womens’ 55+ masters team. Sue Rilen started the event with the second fastest split in 21m 33s for the 4km journey. Suzanne Kemp and Nancy Lloyd ran well for the next two legs before Deb Drennan ran an excellent 18m 38s for the final leg to clinch the silver medal. Sue, Suzanne and Nancy are all in Alan Nolan’s squad at Rotary Field. Deb’s time was the fastest split of all runners in the masters 55+ event.

The open women’s team of Kate Hobbs, Annabel Hickey, Claudia White and Holly Ratajec ran very well to come a respectable fourth place with Kate running the fastest split of 15m 36s for the 4km journey.

In the men’s events, the open men’s team of Paul Cummings, Ed Goddard, Fudge Atshan and Nick Walker came 8th against tough competition. Ed, only 16, easily the youngest runner in the team, ran superbly to run the fastest split in 12m 53s for the 4km’s.

Ed, a year 11 student at Shore School, is another who has been in excellent form this winter. He won the Mini-Mos in June against all comers for the second year in a row in a good time 15m 23s for the 5km. He is another who will be running on Friday in the All Schools Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek. He is virtually qualified for the National Cross Country Championships in late August in Albany, WA. He is grateful to Andrew MacDonald, coach and committee member of UTS Norths, for his guidance in his early teens. He is now coached by Mike Little at Centennial Park. On the track, Ed would like to tackle the steeplechase event.

Paul McCoy Funeral Details

JULY 28, 2014

It is with a heavy heart that we bring the sad news that one of our well loved club members Dr Paul McCoy passed away on the evening of Thursday 24th July. After a cardiac incident at Rotary Athletic Field at approximately 5pm, Paul was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where unfortunately he did not recover.

Paul was heavily involved in the Northern suburbs community. A well respected dentist in Lane Cove, a national level masters sprinter, amongst other community involvements.  He was a friend to many of us, his gentle and kind spirit touched those who were privileged to know him.

The UTS Northern Suburbs Athletic Club expresses our deepest condolences and our thoughts are with his loving family at this time.

Our gratitude goes to those level headed, brave and courageous people who administered CPR and dealt with fellow athletes under extraordinary circumstances. For those present, the club offers our support in these trying times. If anyone wishes to contact me I am available on 0439 257 968. The clubs response of further assistance is being finalised and will be made available shortly.

With Sympathy
