The Passing of Mayor Pat Reilly
Dear UTS Northern Suburbs Athletic Club Members,
It is with great sadness that we provide the terrible news of the passing of Pat Reilly, Willoughby City Council Mayor and Patron of UTS Northern Suburbs Athletic Club.
Mayor Pat Reilly was a long-time supporter and friend of the UTS Northern Suburbs Athletic Club always striving to have Rotary Athletic Field as the best Grass Track in Sydney for the exclusive use for Track & Field.
Mayor Reilly’s community involvement and strategic vision was unprecedented and he will be greatly missed by UTS Norths and the community at large.
The UTS Northern Suburbs Athletic Club expresses our deepest condolences and our thoughts are with his loving family at this time.
On behalf of UTS Northern Suburbs Athletic Club
Pat Reilly Funeral and Tribute
Pat Reilly Funeral & Tribute - Tuesday 28th January 2014
The club was represented at the funeral in the morning by Ron Bendall, Ross Douglas and Peter Douglas. Life member David Archbold also attended. The Our Lady of Dolours Church at Chatswood was absolutely packed. There were a number of VIP's present including the Hon Joe Hockey, Member for North Sydney and Hon Gladys Berejiklian, Member for Willoughby.
The Pat Reilly Tribute was held in the nearby Concourse Concert Hall in Chatswood in the afternoon. The club was represented by Andy West, Ross Douglas and Peter Douglas. Apologies were recorded for Frazer Dowling and Peter Higgins. Andy and Ross wrote tributes on behalf of the club in one of the tribute books located in the concert hall.
The Concert Hall is part of a multi million entertainment complex plus library (called "The Concourse") which was finished only a couple of years ago and was built mainly at Pat Reilly's instigation. It has also been affectionally referred to as "Pat's Palace".
It was a superb concert in Pat's honour led by the Willoughby Symphony Orchesta and the 75 piece Willoughby City Choir. There were some special guest artists including David Campbell whose songs included "You will never walk alone" and a Johnny O'Keefe number. A few tears were shed when a gentleman by the name of Martin Buckingham who had a superb tenor voice, sang "Time to say goodbye".
Pat was the Mayor of Willoughby since 1997 and was also the club's Patron. He was also a keen musician. He attended a number of our annual dinners and on one occasion, donned an Elvis outfit and belted out a number of Elvis songs. He also loved the opportunity to speak in public. So much so that Ron Bendall was reluctant to hand him the microphone at our dinners! He was very popular in the Willoughby community. He was born and bred in Willoughby and always keen to deliver better facilities for the people in the area. He leaves a lasting legacy and will be hard to replace.
Alex Willett Continues Outstanding Season
Young UTS Norths athlete Alex Willett continued his outstanding season with a gold medal in the NSW Multi-Event Championships. Alex, who turns 13 next month, was an easy winner in the u14 Pentathlon with a club record score of 2,291 points.
He has demonstrated his versatility by breaking the following u13 club records during the past few months:
Long jump 5.31m
High jump 1.65 (equal record)
Triple jump 11.22m
It is also worth noting that some of these records were set many years ago including the long jump record (1980), javelin (1984) and triple jump (1987). Alex is also a member of Manly Little A’s and attends Killarney Heights High School. His focus is now on the State Little Athletic Championships in late January followed by the State Juniors and Australian Juniors in February/ March. He will be concentrating on his pet events – the high jump, long jump, triple jump and javelin.
Jacinta Fisher won a gold medal in the under 18 heptathlon with a good score of 4,432 points. Her best performances were the 100 metres hurdles (14.95), high jump (1.56m), long jump (5.03m) and shot put (9.56m).
Will North overcame a serious hip/ pelvis problem to take the silver medal in the under 18 decathlon. He also had a kidney infection prior to the event and this affected his training. He finished the first day in third place but with his stronger day being on the Sunday, he was able to catch the second placed Bankstown athlete to win the silver. Unlike most decathletes, Will is very strong in the last event – the 1,500 metres. He ran 4m55.49 but without the injury problems, a time closer to his PB of 4m33s may have been enough to catch the winner Simunovic from Gosford. Will’s next goal is the national multis in Melbourne.
Ben Carter excelled with a bronze medal in the under 16 heptathlon.
In the Masters age groups, Ashley McMahon was outstanding with a gold medal in a state masters record of 5,407 points in the 35+ age group. Congratulations to the other gold medalists - Janet Naylon 45+, Jill Senior 60+ and Doug Barrett 50+.
